Journaling & Emotional Geography

A 7-day Erasmus+ course in Sicily for adult education professionals who want to explore new approaches to learning and reflection.

What if a landscape could become your teacher?

This course invites you to slow down, observe, write and rediscover the connections between yourself, others and the places we inhabit. Through journaling and emotional geography, we will explore how landscapes, memories and experiences shape our identities and can become resources for learning.

Sicily will be our classroom: the coast of Balestrate, Palermo’s urban spaces and stories, the archaeological landscape of Segesta and the atmospheres of Erice will provide opportunities to practise observation, listen and create new narratives.

Creative writing, emotional mapping, sensory exploration and shared reflection will support a journey of personal and professional growth. Each participant will develop their own learning journal and experience practices they can adapt to educational, training and community settings.

Description

COURSE METHODOLOGY

The course adopts a participatory and experiential approach, combining indoor workshops with activities in local environments. Participants experience the methods first-hand, reflect on them together and adapt them to their own professional contexts.

* Journaling and reflective practice: guided and mindful writing to explore experiences, recognise emotions and document learning.
* Emotional geography: affective mapping, exploration of inner landscapes and biogeographical writing to connect places, memories and personal experiences.
* Place-based learning: using landscapes, cultural heritage, public spaces and local stories as educational resources.
* Outdoor learning and sensory exploration: slow observation and direct engagement with natural and urban environments.
* Creative practices: writing, drawing meditation, photography and storytelling to develop imagination and self-expression.
* Collaborative learning: intercultural dialogue, sharing and peer exchange in an open, non-judgmental learning space.
* Transfer to practice: designing an activity for participants’ own organisations, with support from the trainers and the group.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course provides tools to integrate writing, creativity and engagement with places into adult education. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

* Design interdisciplinary and experiential activities, connecting artistic, narrative and geographical practices.
* Strengthen listening, empathy and collaboration through group dialogue and sharing.
* Develop ecological sensitivity and a sense of responsibility, cultivating a more conscious relationship with the environment.

The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with our own eyes.
